If you find yourself leading a group of amazing musicians (or engineers… or ninjas), your job as “leader” is not to necessarily to teach them, manage them, or even direct them. They may know more than you. They may be self-managers. They may have a bigger vision than you have. Your job as “leader” is not to dominate them. Your job is to leverage them.
If your team sucks and you know more than each of them knows, then go ahead and tell them exactly what to do and how to do it. Or, better yet, go find a better team. But if you’ve got a great team of amazing professionals, do the responsible thing and give them the reigns. Let them make the decisions. Ask them where to go.
You may lose some job security, but you’ll move the mission of your organization forward.
