“I don’t need this to work for me.” Now I’m free to give. What I give is no longer a bargaining chip. Now I’m free to love generously.
Deep down we all want to give and love like this. But we’re surviving just like the next guy. “I need you to affirm who I am.” We say this to customers, bosses, fans, friends, spouses, our children. This is the largest battle inside us - to live selfishly, or love generously. To give figs, or to withhold them.
Until we stop requiring everyone and everything around us to affirm our identity, we’re never free to give and love generously. And to give and love generously is who we really are.
